The EAGMA Mohair Pool:

We are very pleased to announce that we held a very successful Mohair Pool in 2009. Check back frequently to see when our next pool is planned.

WHAT IS IT?

A mohair pool is a mass collection of mohair fiber, transported as a whole, to large warehouse distribution centers in Texas.  Generally, they are sold at wholesale to companies interested in buying bulk raw fiber.  Participants are paid for their fiber when the warehouse sells the lot.

OUR POOL?

We will need to achieve a goal of 3500 pounds of mohair to make the minimum requirement feasible to do the pool.  Our mohair will be driven back to Texas by our show judge.  The drop off point, both location and time frame, will be our Annual Show in Lewisburg, V The cost to interested parties will be 40 to 50 cents per pound up front.  This fee to contributors is to cover basic costs and transportation.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO?

Sort your mohair.  Separate the white from the colored, and all colored can be grouped together.  Make sure to grade your mohair.  The softer, finer, younger fiber is more valuable.  Separate adult from kid fleeces.  Weigh or estimate the quantity of mohair you plan to contribute.  Use a scale that provides both pounds and ounces; don’t forget to account for any container you use.  If you do not have a scale at least count the number of fleeces you have, and whether you think each is a heavy or light shearing to make an approximation.  Bag your fleeces.  Try to avoid polypropylene (feed) bags as the plastic fibers can contaminate the mohair.  If you use plastic, do not bind completely closed as it traps moisture.
